The Big Deal About Parvo

Parvo is still a dreaded word to hear in the exam room. Most people have at least heard of the virus and its effects on dogs. With all that we are capable of doing for the parvo patient today, it is still deadly in 20-30% of the cases. So what are the typical signs?

Parvo is a viral disease, therefore typical onset is much like humans experience with viral infection. Initially dogs will become suddenly inactive and depressed, then symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea have the potential to ensue.  Eventually the diarrhea will contain blood, mucous and sometimes even shreds of the lining of the small bowel.  The disease can progress very rapidly and patients can be critical and even die within 24 hours.
